Looking to purchase Durable Medical Equipment and looking around for a medical supply shop nearby?

Let me ask, have you been inside a traditional medical supply shop recently?

If not, well..

This is what you may be getting yourself into…and it's not real pretty.

Imagine, stained pulled carpet, bland walls with all sorts of indistinguishable canes and crutches thrown about. Poorly displayed products with little indication of the features and price…makes me feel confused and old just thinking about it!

But you're not alone. Many have complained that in general, medical suppliers aren't the most attractive equipment. But c’mon we can do better than that right? I mean you deserve a better experience than that.

Nothing against medical supply shops, but the idea of going through a showroom, picking out what you want and coming back a couple days is just a little bit outdated.

Why You Should Buy Medical Supplies Online

Although a wide variety of medical supplies have been available online for quite some time, it’s only until recently that purchasing supplies from an online medical supply store has become widespread.

We want to make sure you’re reaping ALL the Benefits!

Low Overhead

When you purchase on an e-commerce site (the buying and selling of goods and services online) really helps in bringing down the costs of your purchases. E-commerce sites generally have lower overhead costs since businesses don’t have to pay rent or buy real estate.

What’s the result? Lower Prices!

Tax Breaks

Save money on tax when you buy online. Customers are not always required to pay taxes on some goods online. Even better is that Sales Taxes are not even applied to medical items.

No Sales Tax!

At retail locations, you may be forced to pay upwards of 10% or more in sales taxes depending on your location.

Convenience

We get it...medical supplies and equipment are necessities and you need them ASAP. You may not have the time to browse through a showroom and want something that just works. When you order medical supplies online, they arrive discreetly at your front door! Best thing yet, is that most items come 95% preassembled.

With injuries or limitations, you simply cannot be inconvenienced by having to make a trip to your local DME shop. Having items delivered quickly and directly to your home is way more appealing. Caregivers are able to order items online and spend more time tending to other needs.

Free Shipping

Big and bulky medical supplies such as a mobility scooter should cost a fortune to ship, right??

Nope! Zip’r Mobility is proud to offer Free Shipping on all our Mobility Scooters & Electric Wheelchairs.

Wider Selection

We like to think of the internet as a giant mall where you can shop at the comfort of your own chair. Best thing is no physical mall can compete with the internet’s GIANT list of inventory.

You have access to all retailers and product variations right at your fingertips! How cool is that?

That blue mobility scooter you wanted (that's not available in stores) is one google search away from winding up at your front door.

Research

You have the ability to do a great deal of research on a product online. Specifications and product descriptions are often rich in detail allowing you to compare similar products or variations ensuring that you choose the right product for your needs.

Customer Service

Especially when buying medical products, you want to be backed by the best customer service. Online retailers such as Zip’r communicate quickly via phone, email, chat, or even social media from anywhere in the world, at any time of the day. With access to all the channels of communication, it is easy to get support when you need it the most.

The Future Of Buying Medical Supplies Online

We are continually working on improving our site like many others to custom cater our customer experience matching relevant products to you!

For serious medical conditions, waiting a week or two may not be an option and several services are beginning to offer same-day delivery in certain locations. Completely defeating the one advantage retail locations had over online medical supply. Zip’r offers One Day Shipping to our customers!

Most DME shops offer an outdated experience. Purchasing medical supplies online is incredibly convenient, cheaper, and often more effective than attempting to buy them in person. Buying medical equipment online offers a positive experience and the advantages are only growing.

Purchasing medical supplies online is most beneficial and convenient to YOU, the customer. And the customer is alright right, right?

The James Dyson Awards recognise the best of international design and engineering that can help people and their communities. While it does not focus specifically on disability aids and independent living, these are common themes that inspire the entries. Here are some of the best.

Samarth

Samarth, helps in shifting wheelchair users from wheelchair to any other medium e.g. bed, car and vice versa in an easy, safe and convenient way. Also, it drastically reduces the efforts of care giver in handling of patient, especially during transfer.

Project Circleg – Low Cost Prosthetic Leg System

In less developed countries there is a lack of satisfactory and affordable prosthetic systems. Project Circleg closes this gap by using recycled plastic waste and simple production methods. The Circleg can therfore be produced locally and cost-effectively.

Air Chair

The Air-Chair provides ease of access and mobility to disabled air travellers. It enables them to use a single wheelchair for the entire journey from the airport to the aircraft. It integrates into the aircraft seat and enables all the inflight features.

Origami Hand

Origami-hand is a disposable robot hand that folds and assembles paper. I aim to expand the application range of robot by manufacturing the robot hand at low price which can perform complicated operation.

ARCX

Arcx is an innovative prosthetic foot for below-knee amputees. The design allows users to experience daily life with minimal concessions by providing an adjustable ankle hinge, enabling both running and walking and giving extra comfortable sideways stability.

Parkinson Smart Cane

Patients with Parkinson's disease suffer from a condition known as Freezing of Gait (FoG) which causes a pause in walking despite the intention to walk. The device described helps patients overcome FoG through visual, auditory and tactile sensory cues.

A familiar phrase we can all relate to one way or another but for the parent/carer of a child with severe disabilities it can be easier said than done.

If the child in question has difficulties with movement/dexterity, needs their shoe laces tied for them, or has a mental disorder that causes them to act out, the whole process can turn into a daily struggle.

A couple years back when Blackwood attended Naidex Scotland 2013, we were able to show bespoken members the Tomcat Twister Shoes that many people raved about. Today we can show you a whole new kind of shoe tying system that approaches the problem from a totally different angle.

Hickies lacing system is not designed from the outset for children or adults who have disabilities but this little caveat doesn’t have to mean it can’t be an effective solution to the problem.

Stylish and smart, the Hickies lacing system basically consists of rubber elastic laces that don’t need to be tied. You just stretch open the shoe and shove it on your foot and it naturally tightens and fits around it.

Hickies lacing system is (according to a video introducing the product) “[…] engineered to withstand the forces of various kinds of activities. They loosen and contract with your foot for a comfortable and secure fit with each step.”

You don’t need to buy any specialist shoe either, these fit to all and any regular shoe provided it has eyelets for the laces to poke through.

Down side? Well it’s a bit more expensive than your average laces at £11.99 for a set. So basically, hope they don’t snap easily, although it seems from online reviews that this isn’t likely to happen.

What do you think? Could Hickies lacing system be a smart solution for dressing a disabled person including a child? Let us know what you think.

‘The big thing from the competition was the publicity. It gave the product credibility.’ Catching up over a cuppa, Grant tells me what’s been happening since then and what the future holds for his start-up company S’up Products.

The S’up Spoon, we remind readers, was inspired and instigated by Grant to enable people who have severe tremors and shakes to eat certain foods (e.g. soup, cereal, rice, etc) independently without spilling. Grant, who has shaky hands as a result of Cerebral Palsy, worked with Mark Penver from 4c Design to invent the product. It is a plastic spoon with a thin handle and a deep hollow to hold food and prevent any spillage when people's hand shakes. Doesn’t sound that exciting, but to many it’s the difference between eating with dignity and being forced to rely on someone else to feed them.

And it’s proven very popular among its customer base. Following his win in the 2015 Blackwood Design Awards the publicity that followed led to a surge in orders from all over the world. So where are they now? ‘We’re about to order our 3rd batch of 1,000 spoons from the manufacturer’ says Grant, indicating the reach of the S’up Spoon; a reach that may have received a small boost also thanks to a feature on the BBC’s Songs of Praise last September.

Looking ahead however, Grant hopes to develop further products to help people eat independently and is looking at design grants that would help him turn his ideas into reality. ‘The main thing in the pipeline is a bowl’ says Grant. ‘I would also like to develop the mini sup for children’, he adds.

The idea of the bowl, he explains, came about after the he started using the S’up Spoon. ‘I was using the S’up Spoon thinking I'd solved one problem but now this flags up another one. For people with tremors or poor motor abilities it’s very easy to accidentally hit the side of the bowl and tip it, sending food everywhere.’ Grant jokes that he even went to strange measures to try and find a suitable substitute. ‘I started using a dog bowl but found the flat bottom made it less than ideal. If you’re having soup or cereals with milk you end up with a layer of liquid at the bottom you can't easily scoop.’

He later found an existing bowl that had a suction pad under it to stick to the table. Again this didn’t quite work for him as any humidity in the pad loosed it. ‘A bit like the spoon I thought there must be a better solution than this’.

‘I combined the dog bowl idea and with the shape of the plastic bowl. The bowl has an inner rim so when you scoop stuff with the spoon you don't accidentally push it out of the bowl and onto the table.’ As with the S’up Spoon, he started out by getting his own prototype made. ‘I did a Blue Peter’ he says whimsically. Using the old empty-bottle-of-Fairy-liquid and PVA glue approach, Grant went to visit a potter in Edinburgh with a very rough looking example of what he was after.

Grant now uses the bowl as well as the S’up Spoon every morning for breakfast. ‘The only problem is it's a bit heavy because it’s ceramic, but it needs to be so that the bowl can't lift off the table and spill food. This is just one of the little challenges that need to be addressed.’ The Mini-S'up, essentially a child sized version of the S’up Spoon, is a tempting prospect for Grant too as he feels it potentially holds a much larger market that the bowl. ‘From a commercial perspective it makes sense to do the mini-sup, but looking at the origins of the company and its social enterprise roots the bowl is more logical.’ Ideally he tells me, he would love to do both.

His other great ambition is to crack into the market that the NHS represents but it’s a tough thing to achieve. ‘Just last weekend when I was at the meadows festival I met the MP and the MSP for Edinburgh South (PICTURED). They totally got what I was trying to get to. They asked for [a S’up Spoon] to send to the health minister. I'm hoping that will open up conversation about it at a higher level.’ Even if, as he says, people waiting to be discharged from hospital or care could have the option to try the S’up Spoon for a while to see if it’s for them, that would be a great step.

If you’ve ever used the S’up Spoon we’d love to know what you thought of it. Share your thoughts in the comments sections or email Grant Douglas at Info@sup-products.com.

Who’s it for? People who have the use of only one hand. This could be due to either losing the other one, being born with only one or simply a weak grip.

What is it? A counter top device that grips jars tightly so that you can open them using one hand. Ideal for people who have either lost a hand or lack strength in one or the other.

How does it work? It’s ludicrously simple. The device sits on the counter (or table), the jar goes in the centre of the clamp which is fitted with rubber for grip, and with your hip you use your body weight to push against it. When the jar is firmly in place, simply use one hand to twist the lid off.

Is it any good? Well the verdict appears to be highly positive. The only feedback I could find on it was from two very happy customers on Amazon. In both cases these are people who have lost an arm and find this device both brilliant and invaluable. One user has even bought extras for others they know have the same problem.

Who’s if for? People who have bad balance and difficulty getting in and out of the Bathtub.

What is it? A simple concept, easy to install and, apparently, highly efficient; the Moen Home Care Glacier Tub Grip fixes itself firmly to any regular bathtub providing a useful handle grip for people who struggle to get in and out.

How does it work? Easy enough, you place it over the rim of the tub. You tighten it with a little wheel that you turn manually. Lastly you close the clamp down to secure it in place. I feel almost silly explaining these steps.

Is it any good? User reviews of the Tub Grip on the company website include one from a buyer who was saved an expensive walk in shower installation thanks to the Glacier Tub Grip. Another person describes how it has given them peace of mind knowing their elderly mother has this. It’s pretty stylish too and with its cream tone and smooth contours, probably wouldn’t look out of place in most bathrooms.

Who’s it for? People who have a condition that causes uncontrollable tremors (e.g. Parkinson’s disease)

What is it? A simple and sleek plastic spoon that enables people to eat things like soup, breakfast cereal, peas, corn, etc if they normally would struggle due to shaking.

How does it work? It doesn’t look like a spoon much and therein lies the brilliance. The food holding end of it has a deep hollow groove to hold your meal in as it approaches your mouth. Shake all you want but you’re unlikely to spill anything. Once in your mouth, just tip it back and enjoy.

Is it any good? We can confidently say it is. It received the stamp of approval from Blackwood in 2015 when it won the Blackwood Design Awards. The designer and owner of S’up Products, Grant Douglas, has Cerebral Palsy and developed it to meet his own requirements. He’s been using it ever since and has legions of fans and followers all over the world. That’s a pretty solid testament to its worth.

Demand is a charity that provides creative solutions when there’s nothing suitable to buy that suits those needs. And there’s no shortage of creative thinking at Demand.

Lynnette has had a varied career at Demand, starting out as a designer and working on a variety of projects include the Frieasel (more on that below) but these days she takes care of the marketing for this vibrant and inventive organisation.

Demand has helped many people over the years from mum Laura who needed one off designed changing table so she could change her baby girl’s nappies to Keen pianist JJ who was not forced to give up the ivories thanks to Demand’s sturdy cantilever that can support a digital piano to hover over his bed at an angle.

The Frieasel was first prototyped by Lynnette although she specifies that a good few people have worked on it since its inception. The opportunity for something brilliant came about in an ordinary way for Demand - ‘In this instance the phone call came from a lady who was teaching a painting class at a care home quite local to us. She was running a weekly painting class and had helped with a lot of adapted paint brushes and found ways for people to start expressing themselves.’

There were however some aspiring artists who struggled to reach the canvas, the teacher along with her assistant had to physically hold it in place for them at a suitable angle.

‘She came to us with two questions really. She had one artist who had a very strong impulsive movement with his arms. If he was using a normal easel the painting would fly off; it wouldn’t stay in place. She also had painters who couldn’t reach their arms out far enough to reach the canvas, so that was when she had to hold the canvas close to them. So we started designing and we thought it would take two solutions but as it turned out the Frieasel that we came up with was strong enough and sturdy enough for Mark, who paints with strong uncontrolled arm movement, but it was also flexible enough for the painters who can’t reach their arms out any distance to get to the canvas.’

The Frieasel was first designed in 2011 and since then 2 more prototypes have been developed. This year four of the artists gave a presentation and exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art. In their speech they spoke about how their painting had developed since using the Frieasel. Not taking away from the brilliant tuition they have received from Anita who is their painting teacher, the Frieasel nonetheless gives them a lot more control and freedom to explore their creativity.

The Blackwood Design Awards

In late 2016 Demand officially entered the Frieasel into the Blackwood Design Awards in the ‘Best New Concept’ category. Lynnette explains whys Demand entered:

“We were big fans of the S’up Spoon which won just last year. One of our previous design students had actually worked with 4c Design when they were developing it. So we were big fans of that and just watched the success of it really. And we saw that the Blackwood Design Awards was growing this year and having two different categories so we wanted to have a shot ourselves.”

Frieasel soon established itself as one of the favourites in its category and the competition overall, and in mid-December Lynnette got the notification that Frieasel had gone through to the final of the Blackwood Design Awards.

‘We were excited. We’ve not won competitions in anything for our designs before because we don’t tend to get publicised much. So it’s great to see our stuff on the internet and getting shortlisted.’ Unfortunately for Demand however, this would ultimately not be their year for the trophy as after much deliberation, the judges opted for another finalist in the ‘Best New Product’ category. Lynnette has no regrets though, and speaks fondly of the competition. ‘The thing I really love about entering competitions like that is just seeing everyone else’s entries. It’s a really good forum new designs and new ideas to get out there and get seen.

The Blackwood Design Awards attracts brilliant and innovative designs and concepts that can help people who have disabilities live more independently. Before we draw our conversation to a close, Lynnette gives a small spoiler that guarantees 2017 will be another great year… As we finish talking about the competition she just quickly adds in, ‘I’m sure you will hear from our team again next year!’

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Kozee Handz Electric wheelchair Panel Kover. Just to clarify in case you couldn’t tell, it is in fact a little water proof pouch that fits over the controls of a power wheelchair and prevents the mechanism getting soaked. It has the added benefit of shielding the user’s hand from the elements. Fingers need not be frozen any longer!

The full features, according to one online seller, are:

100% waterproof.

Protects your control panel from water ingress.

Suitable for left hand or right controls.

Soft cuffs and see through panel.

Choice of colours.

Which of these innovative designs do you think has most to offer?tag:www.bespoken.me,2016-12-14:6411014:Topic:590212016-12-14T12:57:56.867Zbespoken Teamhttp://www.bespoken.me/profile/bespokenadministrator

Followers of the Blackwood Design Awards will remember that the S’up Spoon won the 2015 competition. A simple design, the S’up Spoon is a specialised but affordable piece of cutlery that enables people with severe tremors to eat independently without spilling any food.
Followers of the Blackwood Design Awards will remember that the S’up Spoon won the 2015 competition. A simple design, the S’up Spoon is a specialised but affordable piece of cutlery that enables people with severe tremors to eat independently without spilling any food. This works particularly well with things like soup, breakfast cereals or peas and other such foods. The spoon itself looks nothing like your usual one. It is long and narrow with a hollowed out bit at the top where the food can sit without falling out.

The S’up Spoon, which was designed by Grant Douglas and Mark Penver, has met with considerable praise for resolving a very old problem with an intelligent and yet uncomplicated concept.

There’s a new kid on the block to watch out for however…

You may have seen before the Liftware spoon which uses a mechanism to counter the shakes and tremors and work with them to keep the food steady as it goes to the mouth. Liftware have recently unveiled a new product, the Liftware Level. It operates to a large degree along the same lines as their first model but the Liftware Level is even more flexible than its predecessor.

This short video gives you an idea of what I mean:

Liftware Level costs $195.00 (or £153.96), and in this respect it undoubtedly falls behind the S’up Spoon which can be purchased for £12.50 which is about $15.83. The argument to counter the high cost (according to their website) is that it works out at about 17c per meal for the first year (it does, roughly. I checked) and thereafter it’s paid for. It also comes with different heads; a spoon or a fork.

So which of the two gets your vote of confidence, S’up Spoon or Liftware Level? Your feedback in the comments section below.
