My brother is diabetic and recently had a leg amputated, I wondered if anyone on the bespoken network can point me in the direction of useful information/resources about dealing with the challenges he will face in a house that is quite frankly not suitable for someone in his situation.

There are no toilet facilities on the ground floor of the house and no room to install a chair lift but I'm sure he will not be the first person to have faced these obstacles.  If anyone knows of any equipment or resources that may be helpful to him I would like to hear from you.

Thank you in anticipation.

Hi, Gordon,

I have been astonished at how small and compact you can make toilets and showers nowadays. So it might be worth exploring this option. Once he is confident, he may have much better agility. one of the things that are useful but are very seldom mentioned are electric socks. You can get them on the NHS from vascular clinics - and they are worth their weight in gold in the winter time!

Kind regards,

Linda

Thank you Linda, I'll tell him to look into this.

Hi Gordon,

Hopefully your brothers occupational therapist will help in assisting find different equipment he may need and find out about better toileting facilities until he is able to get up and down the stairs.

Hi Gordon, if you get in touch with the local access team at social services, they can arrange a visit with a Technical officer from the Disabled Facility grants team. During the visit they should discuss options of stairlifts and possible Saniflow type WC to be fitted, or help to move to another property that would be more suitable for adaptations.

Hope this helps, good luck

Regards Dave H

The ot  at yoyr brothers limb centre can help him with equipment.as an amputee myself,on the whole, you have to chase ots.the ot should  have visited your brother when he was on the ward to do a home assesment.
Further to my comments....... i had to scoot up and downstairs on my backside!!! the answer for me,was to move house.

0/T and social services should be contacted with a view to visiting your brothers home to see what can be done or maybe will require to move to suitable adapted accomadation , hope he gets things sorted .
