A wheelchair cushion that stops you from getting too hot - WheelAIR just got a whole lot cooler!

Last year’s Blackwood Design Awards finalist WheelAIR has since made a big impression in the world of independent living and recently had its official launch party in Edinburgh!

A little background

Designed with the input of Paralympic athletes as well as wheelchair producers, WheelAIR uses inbuilt fan technology which not only cools the back but also reduces the user’s core temperature by taking away excess heat and moisture. This allows for instant comfort and better temperature control. The cushion also offers extra support through a unique blend of carefully selected foams.

Speaking to bespoken, Laura McFarlane, who is Operations Manager at WheelAIR, said:

“The launch party was a great success and everyone really enjoyed themselves. We had a wide range of attendees including distributors, healthcare professionals, industry leaders, wheelchair athletes and WheelAIR investors. We were lucky enough to hosted by our banking partners Santander, at their corporate office. This overlooks the beautiful St Andrews Square in Edinburgh, at the very heart of Scotland. This was an apt location considering we had gathered to celebrate not just the WheelAIR market launch, but wider progress and innovation in Scottish accessibility.”

Award winning accountant, Faith Simpson was a guest speaker at the launch and former GB wheelchair rugby Captain and now brand ambassador for WheelAIR, Mike Kerr was also in attendance. “I was attracted to the WheelAIR” says Mike, “as I myself have a spinal cord injury & I am unable to regulate my body temperature. I will continue to be involved with WheelAIR as brand ambassador and will help promote it as much as I can. It’s a fantastic product.”

What’s next?

WheelAIR’s aim now is to be the centre of expertise for heating and cooling in the mobility industry, “…and we have lots of ideas in the pipeline as to how to achieve that aim” says Laura, “so watch this space!”

Having now sealed their seed round of investment, investors include six high net worth individuals who span the UK. They are wide ranging and include an Invictus games star and an Occupational Therapist.

The first 500 units of WheelAIR are being sold online and distributors have also taken large orders, including industry giant John Preston. “The feedback from our first and most loyal supporters is incredibly important to us and we look forward to hearing their thoughts in due course when they have had a chance to test the WheelAIR out.”

Ryan MacDonald is confirmed to be on the judging panel for this year’s Blackwood Design Awards and coincidentally he was one of the test users. Find out what he thought below…
