A new independent living device called Careclip has recently been unveiled by Motech. This easy-to-wear device detects the user’s location, the level of activity and the overall wellbeing by using sensing communication technology.

Careclip was designed with a panel of elderly people in order to assist with independent living. The gadget, which can be clipped onto clothing, tracks the user in real time. It also features a compact charging dock and a web-based app which provides real time updates both to the user and to their families.

The web-based app

Thanks to this web-based app, it is possible to get a lot of data about the location of the user through the dashboard. The user can limit or maximise the information collected through the dashboard monitoring. This custom monitoring dashboard can be used on PC, tablet or smartphone.

The user can also use a two-way voice communication system which is integrated to the device to contact carers or emergency services if they need help at any time. Moreover, when an alert is triggered, Careclip initiates a discussion with the user. The device uses a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) which can be used from home. It includes a satellite navigation receiver which can locate the user if needs be.

Careclip was developed to be easy to use as an intuitive spring loaded clip. It is stylish in order to remove the stigma associated with personal alarm systems. It allows a wide range of attachment methods. It is multifunctional; indeed it can report on the user’s activity levels and comes with a lanyard accessory which gives the option to be worn around the user’s neck.

What’s the idea

The potential for little slips and accidents rises with age so it is important to put the user in the best situation possible. Moreover, increasingly innovative products are intended for people who need regular assistance. The aim of these services is to increase the feeling of independence and security of the user. Do you have any experience about these technologies? Do they improve your independence? Let us know.
