We look at the role art plays in finding confidence through self-expression.  Artistic creation can often be overlooked as a way for people to communicate and connect especially for those who find themselves isolated due to disability. Recently a number of UK based charities have emerged which look to create a space for disabled people to show off their artistic side and raise awareness for the participation of disabled artists within the art community.

Conquest Art

Conquest Art is one particular charity that provides classes and workshops to help people overcome their physical limitations through the participation in artistic activities. Founded by Ursula Hulme MBE, Conquest Art describes their classes as a way to help members “find fulfilment through participation in creative art, whatever the level of their ability”.

Originally a textile designer, Ursula Hulme travelled to England from Berlin as a refugee in 1938. There she worked as an auxiliary nurse during wartime before deciding to combine her medical training with her artistic ability to become an art therapist. In 1978 Ursula started giving art classes in hospitals and churches and from this Conquest Art was born.

Using a variety of techniques the class leaders and helpers at Conquest Art encourage others to advance their level of artistic ability. Whether through painting or with the aid of computer technology, Conquest Art allows individuals the chance to express themselves in their own way and at their own pace.

Disabled Artists

The emergence of such groups, like Conquest Art, is representative of the growing recognition for the work of disabled artists. Keith Salmon, a visually impaired artist, won the Jolomo Award in 2009, one of the most prestigious art awards in Scotland and revered artist and wheelchair user Ryan Gander won the Zurich art prize in 2009 for his conceptual artwork.
