Are you looking for an approach to play that is both interactive and accessible to people with reduced mobility? With the Sound and Light Floor, bespoken presents to you a unique and innovative approach to play.

The 2014 edition of the Naidex National exhibition showcased a range of products designed to promote independent living. Some of these products were specifically intended at improving the quality of leisure and play for individuals of any age. The Sound and Light Floor was created by Mike Ayres Design, a company based in Suffolk which displays a spectacular range of adapted multi-sensory play products aimed at individuals with special and additional needs.

The Sound and Light Floor is a wonderfully interactive floor designed for use by people of any ability, from dependent children to energetic adults, and works by playing light patterns and sounds when you move around on it. It is instantly responsive to the most sensitive touch, yet can be jumped on by the heaviest adult or trundled over by people in wheelchairs. Originally intended for child’s play, the Floor can be used for a variety of activities and its different levels of difficulties means that it is accessible to people of all abilities.

The Floor is a wonderful example of how technology can be used to encourage development through cognitive activities that help improve both memory and physical skills. It offers a spectacular range of visual and audio effects designed to stimulate activity and boasts of a variety of 8 interactive games with adjustable time specially designed to challenge the most dexterous individuals. It covers a range of difficulty levels, such as the ‘Follow Me’ game, where players are encouraged to follow squares that light up on the LED floor, the ‘Basic’ game which allows players to create their own melody by stepping freely on the floor, and the ‘Fill the Floor’ game where people get to step on all the squares. Other features include volume control as well as adjustable times for completion of games and difficulty levels Thanks to it shallow aspect (it is only 1.6 inches, or 4cm deep), it can be installed anywhere in the house and can also have ramped edge which makes it easily accessible for wheelchair users. At this time the Sound and Light Floor is listed on £4,495.00 (exc. VAT) and £5,394.00 (inc. VAT) on the Mike Ayres Design website.
