It looks like automation is set to transform personal mobility scooters, if Hitachi’s new robotic vehicle is anything to go by.

Like its human–controlled counterpart, the Ropits (Robot for Personal Intelligent Transport System) is intended for the elderly and people with walking difficulties, travelling primarily on pavements at low speeds.

The vehicle is accessed by its front door and once seated the passenger can type in their destination using a touch screen interface. The battery-powered scooter then takes over with the driving, using its built in GPS and array of cameras, gyros and sensors.

The Ropits is due to be trialled in the Japanese city of Tsukuba.
