Tactile marking on a light switch
Sugru is a mouldable silicone clay which dries to a hard, rubbery finish. To the eyes of somebody who likes making their own accessibility hacks, it’s a little silver sachet of magic.
Brushing your teeth is the archetypal mindless habit, but with reduced gripping ability, it becomes much more of a chore than it needs to be. But Lily didn’t let this stop her being her dentist’s darling: Sugru grips mean that she can now change the angle of the brush to reach every corner, and a rubber band keeps the brush securely in her hand until the job is done.
The official Sugru website features several other clever ideas, including tactile marked USB sticks for a blind user, and wheelchair joystick upgrades.
Would a cunningly moulded bit of silicone improve your living environment? Maybe there’s a sugru shaped space waiting to be filled somewhere.
