The Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality has been helping people with disabilities for just under 40 years, to get to and enjoy the places they want go to. Murray Vidockler had some 30 years of experience in the travel industry as a travel agent, international tour operator and airline executive, before he realised that there had been very little head way made for people with disabilities. Bear in mind that he would have started his travel career in 1946, where travel was seen as something for the rich and famous, morph into the 50s, 60s and 70s where the jet age took hold and travel around the US and the globe was made easier, cheaper, and accessible to all, but not quite all as he realised. He decided to “educate the travel industry as to the economic possibilities of this underdeveloped market.” A good plan since businesses rarely listen unless it effects there bottom line. The result was welcomed by hoteliers across the country and created a multi million dollar industry.

'The Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality (SATH), founded in 1976, is an educational non-profit membership organisation whose mission is to raise awareness of the needs of all travellers with disabilities, remove physical and attitudinal barriers to free access and expand travel opportunities in the United States and abroad. Members include travel professionals, consumers with disabilities and other individuals and corporations who support our mission.'

The ideals have been replicated in a number of different sites for the UK. www. able-2-go.co.uk for example is a travel agency that will “recognise the difficulties that a disabled client may face throughout the whole process of going on holiday and we endeavour to provide the support you need.”

www.accessibletravel.co.uk/ is another agency that is set-up for people with a disability to make and has a fairly impressive list of destinations ready to go.

But we are missing a trick I feel. While these site are there to plug there holidays why isn't there somewhere just for advice. Somewhere to just ask question or see reviews...there is and it ours! With so many of us now using this social media page surely there is a wealth of local information that we can now draw on too.

Have you been on holiday? Write about it. Start an article and get involved. Tell us and everyone else about the wonderful time you had / awful fawlty towers experience. Did you pick up any tips that other need to know about? Let us know.
