Whether as an efficient way to travel or a way to boost your fitness while looking just that little bit retro, cycling, simply put, is fun.

As a low-impact form of exercise, as well as being easy to fit into a daily routine, cycling is one of the most popular and beneficial fitness activities in the UK. When looking at the sheer amount of innovation that goes into professional  para-cycling you would be forgiven in thinking that disabled cycling technology was only available for athletes competing on an international stage and not for those simply looking for a way to keep fit.

Tomcat are a unique and innovative company that works to make cycling accessible to everyone and have made it their mission to ‘change the world of special needs cycling forever’. Based in Gloucestershire, Tomcat design and build custom made tricycles with the purpose of getting those who are at a physical disadvantage cycling. Made for both children and adults, Tomcat trikes are designed to fit the individual’s needs and can even help those with muscle weakness or coordination problems finally get the chance to experience cycling.

Recently Tomcat has developed a hand powered trike for children who are either amputees or have no use of their legs. Using Tomcat’s inventive Ready, Steady, Go technology that uses an easy to use drive belt system, the trike has an efficient design which allows for a smoother and less exertive cycling experience.

This cycling innovation is also the world’s first hand-propelled tricycle that can be fitted with carer control equipment that allows another person to brake and steer the trike from behind. As a winner of the 2013 Queen's Awards for enterprise in Innovation, Tomcat really are innovators of disabled cycling technology.
