Hi,

The pressure pad was home-made -it was extremely effective, and one of the best devices that I have seen considering that this was 1980! I think it had been an ordinary electric heating pad, which was wired to the doorbell.

I think that there is only one person still alive who can give me details, and I'm going to visit him tomorrow. If I'm wrong, I'll let you know. But to me it showed how simple things can be adjusted to fit the situation.

Kind regards,

Linda

Hi, Dimitrios,

I have come across one thing that I thought was extremely subtle and unobtrusive:it was a pressure pad under the carpet just inside the front door which set off an alarm when anybody walked on it. It was used as an alert for a disabled person, as any stranger who came in the front door  not knowing  that it was there, was forced to step on it,  and a warning was generated.

If there are changes in habits, less contact with people, it strikes me that there will be less movement in the house. You have probably already considered this, but I throw my experience in for good measure, because it was very simply done, totally invisible, and an ideal solution to keeping someone safe.

If someone suddenly stopped going out - or reduced their activity, this idea in reverse would be one way to identify the problem at an early stage.

Kind regards,

Linda

Okay, Dimitrios,

I'm still not that clear unfortunately.

Is it computer aided devices you are talking about as an assist to communication?

If so, then I am following where you are coming from...

Kind regards,

Linda

Hi,Dimitrios,

I have experience of dealing with communication difficulties in both younger and older age groups.

There is the gradual loss of speech that I worked with with Friedrich's Ataxia- to the difficulties in communication with Muscular Dystrophy. I have had dealings with profound deafness ,and worked at keeping all these people asactive as possible in the community.

It is a struggle, as loss of communication is one of the greatest isolating factors. People who are sociable by nature but cannot be understood become very disheartened.

If I can help in any way, please let me know.

Is it technology that interests you most?

Kind regards,

Linda
