I have a friend who has MS and who has recently had a couple of falls when transferring from bed to chair.  She doesn't have any lifting equipment available at home at the moment and given this is a recent occurrence neither her partner nor myself have any experience in lifting and handling.  We want to do the right thing to protect my friend from injury and also ourselves.  Can anyone point me to a good self help source that we can read and learn from?  or give me some simple hints and tips on do's and don’ts.

it would also be useful if anyone could share info on any idea of innovative tools that could be used to help us in the situation when only one of us is around to help her should she fall again.

Hi Pam,

Further to our telephone conversation re moving and handling of individuals it may be of benefit to your friend if she discussed situation with GP or even better the MS nurse, they will review medication and are a great support and wealth of knowledge to carers and the individual themself. We have a MS nurse who comes into Broom Ct and she plays an influential role in respect of individuals care and support needs.

Hi Pam,

She should contact her O.T. A " sliding board "may be useful for safer and easier transfer from chair to bed. Her O.T will give her an assessment to see if she is able to use this in a way which is beneficial to her specific needs.

Contact ot for an assessment to be carried out and they can advise suitable equipment also reach team can help pam

great - thanks for this Leanne.  I'll get on to it.
